Welcome Accessibility

As a leading non-profit heritage organisation caring for some of Ireland’s most prestigious heritage sites, accessibility underpins our mission. We believe that everyone should be able to connect with Ireland’s heritage, culture and landscapes, and we are committed to making our historic properties as inclusive and welcoming as possible.

Each Trust property provides its own tailored Welcome Accessibility information, reflecting the unique character of its buildings, landscapes, and visitor experiences. These local statements outline practical guidance for visitors, including mobility access, garden and pathway conditions, facilities, assistance dog access, event accessibility, and contact details for visitor services.
Our three heritage sites currently include:

  • The National Famine Museum | Strokestown Park, Roscommon – accessibility information for the house, National Famine Museum, gardens, woodland walks and parking
  • Johnstown Castle Estate, Museum & Gardens, Wexford – accessibility features across the castle tours, Irish Agricultural Museum, gardens, café, visitor centre and parking
  • Fota House, Arboretum & Gardens, Cork – accessibility details for house tours, the gardens, café facilities and parking

We will continuously review and enhance accessibility at these locations so that all visitors can enjoy meaningful and enjoyable experiences.

As an organisation, the Irish Heritage Trust is committed to:

  • Promoting an inclusive environment across all Trust programmes, events, and digital platforms
  • Ensuring our staff and volunteers receive training that supports accessible and welcoming engagement. All of our staff have completed JAM Card Inclusively Training.
  • Publishing and maintaining property-specific Welcome Accessibility guides to help visitors plan their visit (roll-out in 2026)
  • Working proactively to identify improvements and adopt best-practice accessibility standards
  • Responding promptly and respectfully to individual accessibility requests or feedback

While the Irish Heritage Trust does not operate a public visitor site from its central office, our team is always happy to provide information or direct you to the relevant property team.
