Open Call for Professional Artist for New Commission at the Home of Poetry & Heritage
Poetry Ireland and Irish Heritage Trust are commissioning a new public artwork for No.11 Parnell Square in Dublin 1. This historic building, currently being conservatively restored by McCullough Mulvin Architects, will soon be home to Poetry Ireland and the Irish Heritage Trust – two leading arts and cultural organisations whose work is of national and international importance for poetry and for our heritage.
No. 11 will be an inclusive, cultural centre set in a special Georgian house, supporting and sharing Irish poetry, heritage and culture with the public. The project includes the conservation-led restoration of the historic council chamber and managers’ office, as well as the establishment of the Seamus Heaney Poetry Library, performance/recital spaces, and an education space for public gatherings.
To mark the next stage in the history of this significant building, the Irish Heritage Trust and Poetry Ireland are seeking an artwork that can create a moment of expression for the building today, a contemporary materially based, 2d or 3d work/s, in any form or medium that can endure. The artwork should stand for itself and offer something visually striking or intriguing – whether subtle, low-key or in more in a more heightened expression. The artwork will be sited within the interior public circulation space at no. 11 Parnell Square and is confined to the main entrance hall with its grand stairway on ground and first floor landing. The artist’s fee is €10,000 inclusive of VAT.
The deadline for Stage 1 submissions is Friday, 30th May. The artwork will be commissioned on Monday 28th July and by 1st December must be completed and paid for. Link to application form and further details.
The artwork is commissioned under the Per Cent for Art scheme, funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage under the project 2040 URDF scheme through the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
